Richmond based Singer/Songwriter D. Folks is taking a different approach to music in 2020. He is known for his incredible song writing abilities, and his harmonious vocals are just as concrete as his keen wordsmanship. On his new single, “The Truth,” he shows fans that he is a soul singer who is ready to hit the mainstream music circuit. I had the pleasure of catching up with the Virginia creative as he openly discussed influential people from Virginia, transitioning into being a singer, and his hot new R&B single.
How did growing up in Virginia impact your decision to have a career in music?
Over the years, Virginia has put out some incredible talent that has inspired me and placed a huge impact on the world of music. Artists like D’Angelo, Missy Elliot, Chris Brown, and producers such as Pharrell and Timbaland have definitely represented Virginia, giving others a platform to dream and believe that they can make it too.
Your original sound is very soulful, can you describe its origins?
It’s based on catchy melodies with soulful quartet harmonies, and simple but timeless lyrics that most can relate to. I also love to use my falsetto whenever it’s appropriate.

Why did you feel it was necessary to focus on your career as an artist in 2020?
I just felt like it was time. I released an album in 2009 named Jupiter and an EP called FolkLure on SoundCloud in 2013. It’s long overdue. Considering our world’s climate right now, there is nothing like good soul music during these trying times.
Who are some artists you hope to work with and who are some you have already worked with?
I would love to work with guitarist and songwriter Tom Misch, and the legendary Raphael Saadiq. They both have a great ear for music and an incredible feel as musicians. In the past, I’ve done shows with Jill Scott, Little Brother, and John Legend. I’ve also recorded songs with Pusha T, Skillz, and I’ve had the privilege to record with some of Virginia’s top producers: the Legendary Bink, Nottz, Reginald “Regg” Smith, and world renowned drummer and musician Nate Smith.
What was the inspiration behind your cover art for “The Truth”?
In the cover art: the house is blurred and unfocused on purpose to express conflict inside the home. Your home is supposed to be a place of peace, to recharge, love, and experience fellowship with your loved ones. In the song lyrics, there are definitely some tensions and issues that need to be expressed. As the songwriter, I left those possible situations up to the listeners. I’m sure there are plenty of possible relationship conflicts to fill in the blank.
What is one thing most people don’t know about you?
I’m a huge dog lover. I own an American Bully named BlowFish and an incredibly cute Frenchie Vai, named after legendary guitarist Steve Vai. I’ve always owned dogs. They are a big part of my family.
