I do not know which spiritual entity to thank for the most beautiful, psychedelic, trip that is Childish Gambino’s Awaken, My Love! Fair warning, if you were expecting this album to be filled with awesome double plays on words such as “Girl why is you lion/lying, girl why you mufasa”, like the verse on 3005, then you might be sadly disappointed. In fact, Gambino has traded in classic rap verses for a more sultry and soulful sound. The album begins with the dreamy, heart throbbing, love balled, “Me and Your Mama” and ends with recounted advice that his parents passed unto him in “Stand Tall”. Throughout the album listeners are transported to an era where funk, bass, love, and social issues meet. Listed below are my favorite featured tracks.
Like many before him Gambino uses the art of song to display the social injustices in America. With lyrics such as “with the gun in your hand, I am the boogieman, I’m coming to get you”, he transforms the childhood tale of the boogieman into a realistic view of how the black man is feared in the US.
This dreamy love ballad was a great way to start this album. After listening to this song you can’t help but play the rest of the album.
Listening to this song is like eating gumbo on a cold day in your grandmother’s kitchen. It’s like watching your Aunties and Uncles show you how they used to “get down” back in the day. There’s enough soul and passion in this ballad to fill me up for the rest of the year.
